- Unique DofE Experience
Home to the world-famous Eiger, the Bernese Oberland cannot fail to inspire you. First climbed in 1938, the North Face of the Eiger holds a top place in mountaineering history with tales of massive avalanches, extreme rescues, heroic climbs and a long list of tragedies - it is surely one of the most impressive sights that you could wish to trek by on your Gold DofE expedition. Standing next to each other, the Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch rise up out of the Bernese Oberland from wide valley floors and cool alpine forests, a stark contrast. Passing under the shadow of the mountains takes you through traditional Swiss villages, high Alpine pastures where cattle graze during the summer months and wide open valleys carved out by ancient glaciers. The Lauterbrunnen Valley is narrow, steep-sided and known as the 'Valley of Waterfalls' with 72 of them cascading down it's sheer sides, a spectacular sight - it is also the deepest U-shaped valley in the world. With many hidden gems to discover, it's very easy to get 'off the beaten track' here.
You may want to celebrate your expedition success with a trip up the famous Jungfraujoch Railway that takes you up to the glaciers, right through the middle of the Eiger itself, visit the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant on top of the Schilthorn where James Bond (On Her Majesty's Secret Service) was filmed or see the beautiful town of Grindelwald, steeped in mountaineering history. If you've had an unforgettable Gold DofE expedition, it's likely that you've done it in the Bernese Oberland!
